About Arius

Downtown Music - Neighborhood Venues

Lovers of chamber music who prefer not to trek downtown for concerts will be thrilled by the emergence of the Arius Chamber Music Society and its two year old string ensemble.    Arius musicians are professionals who have played locally in the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Opera, Minnesota Sinfonia and Lyra Baroque Orchestra as well as many other national and international ensembles. Each program is repeated at multiple regional venues and has works for various ensemble sizes from string quartet to string orchestra and, occasionally, chamber orchestra. Last April and May, Arius added winds and a choir to perform a pair of Bach Cantatas. The Arius Chamber Music Society is dedicated to bringing superb chamber music performances to intimate, acoustically warm, neighborhood venues throughout the Twin Cities' region.

Our emblem of lyre and dolphin recalls the story of Arion, a Greek master of the lyre. His musicianship was so compelling that after entering a contest held in Sicily he not only received the prize, a golden lyre, but was also showered with gifts from his friends and admirers. Returning by boat to his home in Corinth, his shipmates decided to kill him and steal his lyre. He asked to sing one last song which he sang so beautifully that he attracted a school of dolphins. Seeing this, he leapt overboard, golden lyre in hand, and was carried back to Corinth by the en-raptured creatures.

We recognize in this myth the truth that music is the most articulate language of the soul, singing its message to our sympathetic hearts across the depths of time and the waves of care. We identify with Arion in our desire to perceive and then communicate the joy of this music to our audience, and we identify with the delighted dolphins who receive the composer's gift and bear it up with reverence and love, carrying its pleasures forward into the future.

We invite you as our honored patrons and guests to share in our discovery and communication of these musical love notes from the great authors of chamber music. We hope you will, through your participation, join us in recreating the setting for which these wonderful masterpieces were composed, one in which the individual performer's and listener's experience of the music is intensified and articulated through the happy combination of virtually soloistic treatment of the musical parts, the warmer acoustics and friendlier scale of a small hall, and the sense of a command performance for the pleasure of a few friends gathered to enjoy one another's company for the evening.
